Using Google Meet to host a video conference can consume a substantial amount of data. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce your data consumption while still enjoying an optimal video experience. If you are an administrator at a school or non-profit organization, you may wish to restrict video bandwidth. Here are a few ways to save money while still delivering an exceptional experience. Google Meet’s default high-quality video quality setting is 720p. This has a decent resolution, but it consumes a great deal of data. If you have a limited bandwidth plan, 360p is the superior option. It uses half the bandwidth required for high-quality video, but the image quality is superior.

Google Meet will use between 2.4 and 2.6 megabytes for inbound signals and 3.2 megabytes for outbound signals, depending on your network connection. It will use 1.4 gigabytes of data per hour for HD video calls. It will consume 0.91 gigabytes per hour for standard definition video. This will result in a significant portion of your Internet data allowance being wasted.
By setting a data usage limit, you can restrict the amount of data your video conference consumes. You can configure the limit within the Google Meet app, the Google Apps for Work dashboard, and your web browser. The limit is disabled by default, but you can enable it if your battery is low and you’re outside. You can also activate it when you are in a Wi-Fi hotspot with an inadequate signal.
The limit is intended to restrict your uplink data usage to 1 Mbps, but it may not be adequate for video conferencing. You may need to test your Internet connection or upgrade to a faster Internet plan. A faster connection will prevent you from experiencing lag and buffering when viewing low-quality video.
You can also reduce the resolution of the video you are transmitting to conserve bandwidth. Video of lower quality will require less data, but it may not be as clear as video of higher quality. For example, if you are attending a sporting event, you may wish to use a lower bitrate. Use a lower bitrate to avoid data buffering when conversing with someone at your desk. Streaming a concert may require a higher bitrate, however.
In addition to the data-limitation feature, Google Meet offers a mobile app. If you’re not receiving a strong Wi-Fi signal, the app will automatically switch to cellular data. When your device is in this mode, you can still view all other app activities, but video quality will be degraded.
Google Meet is a popular video conferencing application, but if you’re trying to save money, you may want to limit your video bandwidth. You can reduce the amount of data your meeting consumes by decreasing the resolution, adjusting the size of your meeting window, and selecting the optimal video quality settings.
